about

The legend of the Marie Celeste has long been told though no two tales are ever the same. The story is based on actual events that took place in 1872 when the ship Mary Celeste was found sailing the Atlantic devoid of captain and crew, 590 miles west of Gibraltar, by the crew of Dei Gratia. Maritime reports state that the last entry in the log was ten days earlier, the vessel was in good order but the yawl boat was missing. Some accounts say there was still hot food upon plates in the galley. Dozens of theories have been put forward to explain what happened aboard the ghost ship including pirates, mutiny, a salvage scam, hallucinations due to food poisoning, shark attacks, sea monsters, freak weather and seaquakes and even alien abduction! Arthur Conan Doyle, writing under a pseudonym, published a fictional tale based on these events featuring a ship called Marie Celeste and this is the story that is now most widely recognised.
Devil’s Stone is a tune jointly written by Paul and Kerryn, it came together in less than five minutes at a rehearsal session (and Adrienne didn’t think we could do it!). The tune is named after the unusual carved stone of great antiquity (probably Romano-British in origin) located in the East wall of St Michael's church in Copgrove, North Yorkshire.

lyrics

On the blackest night with the wind in her sails
her prow cut through the waves built by rolling gales
her silence was her shroud, from the dark sea was born
and she rode the ocean high through the eye of a storm

And tall stood her masts up where the sea birds fly
she's as cold as the grave, a silhouette against the sky
but there's no hand upon her wheel nor footsteps on her deck
could it be the ghostly light of the Marie Celeste

Her secrets lie aboard her, they'll remain there for all time
unseen shades will guide her through spray capped with rhime
upon the timeless sea roads with thunder at her door
locked inside grey doom she'll sail for ever more

Stars watch down from their vista still and deep
a voyage to nowhere in the winter of her sleep
she's cold to the heart and her soul shall get no rest
could it be the ghostly light of the Marie Celeste
