Inspired by the Russian folk legend of Vasilisa, a beautiful maiden and the old hag Baba Yaga, an East European equivalent of Black Annis. Several stories involve these characters, but this one sees Vasilisa go through the dark forest in search of fire from Baba Yaga the fire keeper, to rekindle the hearth in the home of her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. She brings the fire back through the forest in a skull, but once back home it reduces her wicked family to ashes. The relevance of finding light in the darkness meant that this tale was saved for the time of winter solstice.
