Holly Lord 06:24
Tonight the west wind blows through the hills bending the wheat through the bracken over the gorse howling across the peat elf-fires redden the sky and there's witches on the wind and it's into the darkness of winter we go as the wheel of the seasons spin and on this night Samhain when our fires are burning bright we'll fall the Holly Lord to begin our pagan rite we'll come with sprigs of elder and we'll come with leaves of yew as we step out of the old and dance into the new On the hills they'll light the bonfires to burn upon the sacred ground shadows dance across the flames to the witch bell sound spirits call with haunted voices from the other side and it's into the darkness and out of the light as the earth turns with the tide and on this night Samhain when our fires are burning bright we'll call the Holly Lord to begin our pagan rite we'll come with sprigs of elder and we'll come with leaves of yew as we step out of the old and dance into the new This night will mark the end and beginning of our year we'll call out to the ones of old to make the future clear beneath the moon of the elder tree and by the embers glowing red they'll pass into the summer land until the winter's fled and on this night Samhain when our fires are burning bright we'll call the Holly Lord to begin our pagan rite we'll come with sprigs of elder and we'll come with leaves of yew as we step out of the old and dance into the new And deep beneath the earth she'll lie cold and low waiting for her sister of the spring to show it's farewell to our Oaken Lord and with the Holly bide and it's into the darkness and out of the light as the Earth turns with the tide

It came as a scene from an old picture postcard of Victorian ladies with skates on their feet of ponds frozen over and boughs hung with ice tips and through frosty panes watched the snow and the sleet and the smoke ventured out from the soot blackened chimneys and shimmered beneath an icy cold moon but inside an evergreen stands in the corner with a bright blazing fire to keep out the gloom Chorus There's holly and ivy and white mistleberry the sun is in hiding his face he can't show so fill up your glasses so we can be merry and rosy red cheeks by the fire light glow Under the street lights they'll gather together their shivering voices will ring out with song to sing in the Yule regardless of weather and brighten the darkness all the night long and the mummers perform their plays from the ages in comes King George a man of courage bold while out in the orchard we'll go wassailing and sup on spiced cider to keep out the cold Chorus The holly and oak king are now changing places And Jack Frost is wearing his new winter vest While out in the wood pile old Jack Green is sleeping To awaken in spring from his long dreamy rest So on this Yule tide we'll gather together Beneath the sign of the ancient god's horns As the new year beckons through cold misty weather We'll raise a toast as the sun is reborn Chorus

The wind in the willows Oh the winter nights have been so cold and long blows through the willows and haunts us with her icy song I hide in my pillows keep my nose from the cold night air but out by the willows I know the sign of spring is almost there Chorus Where are you? Where are you? Where have you gone Jack in the Green? I'll find you I'll find you I'll seek you out where the winter's been look for you look for you hiding out in the summer land Where are you? Where are you? Where are you Jack my green man? Beneath the willows I watch the clouds in the summer sky beneath the willows I dream the where the green man lies there I will follow along the path of his leafy feet I am the willow and I'm dancing in fields of meadowsweet Chorus My arms surround him Oh I hold the green man close to me his leaves are falling I know he'll soon be gone from me under the willow the autumn breeze caresses me under my pillow I've found the seed he's left for me Chorus

Tolven Stone 05:07
There's a silver light over Brackenford Wood along the way to where the grey cairn stood on a summer's eve I was draws to one who waited by the ancient stone I'll wear my cloak of velvet green with sprigs of yarrow in between with silver ribbons in my hair I'll go to the one who's waiting there and the dewy grass shall be my bed by the ring of stone I'll lay my head Chorus Stay close she said my amber child I know you yearn for the spirit wild don't walk the moor when your alone and don't stray to the Tolven Stone This great stone of antiquity grants the gift of lust and fertility on Midsummer's eve the young girls go with skin to the air the stone pass through so Amber child stay home 'till dawn and don't stray to the Tolven Stone In the silver light the one I met free of spirit with no regret and the dewy grass was our bed by the ring of stone he laid my head did the sweet night air grant you lust? Did you lie in love and did you lie in trust? Did you share his breath, as the stars grew dim? Did you feel the life quicken within? And in the misted morn she lay alone and shivered by the Tolven Stone

Harvest Song 04:01
Corn rows gleaming ripen in the heady air summer's leaving the seasons turn forever harvest gleanings taken from the fields so fair tall stalks yielding from the seeds we've scattered Bright moon follows sun since time has begun see our bounty's come from the Earth we've gathered sleepy summer days watch through golden haze time to mark the ways and celebrate Lughnasadh Fields of yellow lie beneath the harvest moon days so mellow you could sleep forever come tomorrow we'll see the seasons turn again all will follow the spiral dance together Mother Earth's decree light to dark as all will be the harvest's in for you to see from the Earth we've gathered farewell shining one the parting of the sun all that dies is reborn so celebrate Lughnasadh

Voodoo Bayou 04:03
Long River Road she is shrouded in mist dances the voodoo from the bones she has blessed cursed be the man who has darkened her grave cursed be the one who made her his slave and the Spanish Moss is dripping from the oaken tree boughs she's dancing in the veil between here and now Out across the bayou a steamy light glows you can feel that swampy rhythm as is powers thru your soul and she knows he will follow to seek and to find that toffee skinned woman who's playing with his mind and there's secrets in the hot night air sending shivers down his spine and knowing in the watchful gaze of dark eyes so fine She calls upon the Bokor to paint his skin black he's lost in hoodoo coma and he's never coming back invoking down the Loa see the flames ignite she'll weave and wind her poison ties and lock him in the night trapped inside the murky waters was the price he had to pay as the Mississippi levee throws a shadow cross the way

Through the mists of long ages past in a time of great gods and alchemy beneath dark stones and caverns deep worked a strange and mystic sorcery born in thunder from the mountain awakened by an ancient flame forged by immortal power the mighty swords of Wayland came White metal upon the anvil rings shining steel on iron lay cooled in the dew of early morning runes of prophecy carved along the blade who has seen this shadowy smith? From the dwarves of Iceland learned his trade the noble craftsman of magick metal work the mighty swords of Wayland came Follow along the ancient way to where the silent cromlech lies hear the stones speak in whispers timeless voices sing his praise for such power won't stay hidden through time within the secret of the blades from the blacksmith of the immortals the might swords of Wayland came

Within the dreaming, crimson rushing by Logan rock stands Castle Treen the walls were built when dawn came blushing raised by enchantment from the sea surging waves protect this mighty keep but deep within the chasm lies the key strong will can take you at low water 'cross the gap to break it free Chorus And who would walk the pathway old that leads to this fey misted land what powers raised this giant hold the place where the great Gods stand Beneath the dreaming dark illusion it shimmers where the great walls rise could the Gods detect intrusion in the halls where sleeping Maen lies? So guard the keep and claim the key Maen's ones will stand defiant a fortress to the great folk be this is the land of Gods and Giants

Yonder stands a fine young beauty who she is I do not know go and court her for her beauty let her run say yes or no Pretty girl I've golden riches pretty girl I've house and land pretty girl I've worldly treasures and all will be at your command What do I care for your golden treasures? What do I care for your house and land? What do I care for your worldly treasures? All I want is a nice young man My love wears the tarry trousers my love wears a jacket blue my love sails upon the ocean so young man away with you Why do you wish for so much beauty? It is a flower that will decay like the rose that blooms in summer when winter comes it fades away What do I care for your golden treasures? What do I care for your house and land? What do I care for your worldly treasures? All I want is a nice young man My love wears the tarry trousers my love wears a jacket blue my love sails upon the ocean so young man away with you

about

The core work of this album started life as an idea several years ago when Adrienne talked of making an album featuring songs based on the cycle of the seasons. The continuous sequence of the sabbats – Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Spring Equinox, Beltane, Midsummer, Lughnasadha and Autumn Equinox – can be depicted as an eight-spoke wheel, where each spoke marks an important moment of solar progression and therefore change on Earth. The Celts recognised both days and years as beginning with the dark part such that the evening marked the beginning of a new day and likewise the winter season marked the year’s beginning. We wanted to maintain the Celtic tradition and start our song cycle with a song for Samhain, honouring the ancient origins of the Wheel of the Year that stand firmly in the northern hemisphere, despite following our Australian aspect where the sabbats are essentially reversed and therefore celebrated on opposite dates of the year to better reflect their seasonal meaning.
We decided to use our Samhain song, ‘Holly Lord’ and ‘Into the Green’ for Vernal Equinox on this album, both of which were recorded on Spiral Dance’s first CD from 1996 entitled “Woman of the Earth”, as the songs capture the spirit of their season so well. ‘Weaving the Summer’ from the 1999 album called “Magick” was written for Beltane and inspired by May Day morning in Hastings, Sussex in the company of the Morris dancers and Jack in the Greens – if you listen carefully I swear you can hear “the ring of the Morris bells”! To complete the cycle, five new songs were written. The Midsummer song came first, foundered upon an old English fertility custom described by Janet and Colin Bord in their book “Earth Rites”. In order to become fertile, young women would crawl through fissured megalith, common in Southern England, called a ‘Tolven Stone’. Nick found a tune called “Eireann” from Afro Celt Sound Systems second album that he loved, so he borrowed part of it for our instrumental arrangement. Our Yule song, ‘Solstice Evergreen’ came from a vision of the classic Victorian winter scene; a small agricultural village green covered in snow, oak and elm hung with haw frost, people skating on the frozen stream and the glow of the hearth through a thatched cottage window. A decorative evergreen tree, so familiar to us all today, acted as a reminder that life lay dormant in the stark, frozen landscape.

The spark of new life that reveals the coming of Spring and greets the festival of Imbolc seemed to us to be the most positive energy for our song cycle and should perhaps act as the title track for the album. Brigid, Celtic Goddess of fertility, is synonymous with Springtime so Adrienne drew on her to convey that switch from bare limb to bud burst. That transfer of energy at the moment an entity becomes possessed with life is known as ‘The Quickening’. The lyrics had an odd scan but they fitted so well to a tune by Basque accordion player Kepa Junkera, called “Bok-Espok”, meaning (I’m told by Kepa himself!) “Maybe or maybe not”, so we used it. When we took the song to the studio, Kevin had a fantastic time arranging the percussion layers to capture the excitement of Imbolc and the exhilaration of the quickening.

Experiences gained from our tour to the United States have inspired several songs for this album. Adrienne’s song for the Autumnal Equinox congers up imagery of warm, dusty Australian afternoons and cool, still nights with the first sign of falling leaves from some of our non-native deciduous trees, but the title came from friends we met at a trailer park in Florida during our tour of the United States. Gypsy and Dee were bikers and they tried to portray the sensation of freedom they had whilst riding their Harley. Like those falling autumnal leaves, their description was to ‘Ride the Wind’. Standing on stage at the Council for Magical Arts Festival near Austin, Texas in front of thousands of people on a perfect Samhain night, under a full moon that seemed magnified to double its normal diameter was a magical moment that I’m sure none of the band will ever forget – I know some of us had a tear in our eye! One of the CMA organizers pointed out that we were witnessing a Harvest Moon. These words, plus a verse from a 19th Century Thanksgiving hymn by Henry Alford, learned from the singing of Maddy Prior, later inspired ‘Harvest Song’. It was after several large margaritas at an RV park adjacent to the Johnson Space Center in Houston that the tune ‘Grackle Cackle’ was penned. The Grackle is a native bird of the southern United States and has a habit of cackling incredibly loudly at dawn as it leaves its roost in the pecan groves. This is a somewhat rude awakening for six touring musicians that only got to bed a few hours earlier! For this recording we’ve added it to another of my tunes called ‘Beltane Waltz’. The first threads of ‘Voodoo Bayou’ started to take shape as we travelled along River Road with the levy on one side and the plantation houses and American Oak trees entangled with Spanish moss on the other. Tragically, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have destroyed some of the places we visited, especially in and around New Orleans and those along the Mississippi River and we dedicate this song to those people who suffered in the wake of the storms and to those who continue to struggle and pick up the pieces of their shattered communities.

‘Here be Giants’ is a song based on a story from a book of Cornish legends. It also reminds us of our own pageant Giant of the Hills (GOTH), made for the memory of our friend Helen “Petal” Lyons and often paraded, accompanied by the obstreperous guisers, at various Ales and festivals. We’ve tacked on a tune called ‘Baroch’ taken from the wonderful “Cirque du Soleil”, as it sounds to us so much like a giant walking purposefully across an ancient land. ‘Wayland’s Steel’ tells the story of a skilful blacksmith whose magical forge was said to be near the Uffington White Horse in Oxfordshire. As an interesting link, Brigid the fertility goddess in ‘The Quickening’ is also the goddess of metal-smiths! And keen-eared listeners amongst you might just notice the theme tune to a popular folk and roots music radio show weaved into this song…now how did that happen? We’ve recorded a couple of covers on this album too; ‘The Oak’ was composed by Steve Knightley, one half of the English folk duo “Show of Hands” for the “Theatre of Heart” production “Beaminster’s Oak”, with a wonderful chorus written by Kim O’Loughlin. ‘Tarry Trousers’ is a traditional Irish song learned from German folk-rock band “Tears for Bears” and it is more or less their arrangement too, with just a hint of the Spiral Dance treatment for good measure.
